Prosopis/ mesquite comprises 44 species of nitrogen-fixing trees that are mainly distributed in the arid or semi-arid environments. Prosopis pods are sweet fruits formed of 70%-75% pericarp and 25%-30% seeds. Whole ripe pods of prosopis are ground to produce flour; known as mesquite/ Algarrob flour which is brown, sweet & with an aroma that resembles coffee, cocoa, molasses and hazelnut.

This plant used as domestic fuel, in brick making furnaces & charcoal production, as fuel for railways and in the expansion of agriculture. The moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, carbon content & calorific values were determined from prosopis fuel wood plants.
